In 1968, the Soviet leaders were running out of patience with the Czechoslovak communists, who were trying - from the point of view of the time - to democratise the Czechoslovak state system. The changes they wanted to introduce would seem to us today to be totally inadequate and perhaps even ridiculous, but it was enough to justify the invasion of Czechoslovakia on the night of 20-21 August 1968 by the armies of the five Warsaw Pact states.
